  1. I'm sort of confused about what is due today, do we need to send anything or do anything to get credit for attendance? or do we just do all of the workshops over the week and just bring them next week...
    anyone know?

  2. I'm still a little confused to! I think we are just supposed to type a paragraph about the font we created for today but I'm not sure about wednesday?

  3. It says we have to post a rough of a cover or of sketches in the syllabus.. Im just a little confused on how to do that.

  4. I was wondering the same thing.

  5. Wish there were a specific post about it. If we do need to upload our sketches here then we would have to do it by link. And to do that we would have to upload them to photobucket or another site like it to put the link on this blog.

  6. well I guess I will just post mine here to get the ball rolling. It's only one since I have had only one idea but I'm pretty sure I'm going with it just adding more to it

  20. Jake,

Nice sketches! These two are my favorites:
    http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y175/sygna/jake-pi.png

But it's a bit difficult to see the end result. Try working with your font through illustrator/etc? It'd be nice to see all of your sketches transferred over to illustrator.

    --------------------

    Ivan,

I like the use of texture! Definitely helps with your font's name. Out of the three, I especially like this (http://img651.imageshack.us/i/c5thgradercover3.jpg/)

I feel like you don't have to reiterate the C+ part such as (http://img23.imageshack.us/i/c5thgradercover2.jpg/)!

Are you gonna use the paper texture for your entire booklet? Or just the cover? Good luck this week!

  21. @ vanessa: I really like your first two ideas! the concept of having a brain with scribbles forming a cloud of scribbles is unique. The second one looks messy (in a good way) and it goes with the title of your typeface

I think I might use the paper background for all the pages but I'm not totally sure yet.
    thanks for the tips

  25. Sarah those would be interesting if you could make them fully out of text. If you could do it with text then I think your 2nd one is your best

  26. Sarah, I agree with Taylor. Your second one is very interesting. If it could all be made from type it'd be even gooder.

  31. are you going to be able to do it all with text?

  32. Nope... I didn't realize type was the only thing we could use. But I just reread the guidelines.

  33. @ Chelsea: Looks warm and inviting. Great use of color and simple shapes.

@ Ivan: The C+ grade is an awesome touch! My favorite is (http://img651.imageshack.us/f/c5thgradercover3.jpg/). And like Vanessa said, the texture adds some real depth. Looks good.

@ Alexis: I really like the use of the face. It's really simple and I think you can explore more features (ears, etc. or different moods) with it.

@ Jake: I like the name - Precisely Imperfect. I see a lot of elements that deal with science (atoms exploding or charts) and I like that aspect. I also see something like an eye chart like what they would use at a doctor's office. (http://www.pleasantvalleyeyecare.com/EyeChartBG1.jpg)

@ Vanessa: Love these! The bottom left and top right are my favorite because the cause my eye to travel across the page. Especially the winding/whirling one. Very playful!

Hey all! I'm trying to comment on as many people that I haven't talked to yet! And Eric, I haven't started the workshop but thanks for sharing.

My sketches are really small, but I hope the reference images give an idea of what I'm looking to.

  41. Here is my post for talking about my typeface.....

Creating a typeface has been quite an adventure, to say the least. I definitely found this process to be monotonous and extremely time consuming. This is certainly not a career path I would like to take in the world of design. Although designing my typeface was frustrating at times, this project has been a good experience. I can now appreciate font a lot more, because I now know the time and effort that goes into it all.
Old School Scratch, the typeface I have created was inspired by myself, and the quick stroke of my pen. I have practiced for many years; twenty to be exact. I have produced this less than elegant specimen for type. I describe it as less than elegant, because it is in direct relation to the style I have created, better known as “scratch.” This style is infused with an old school taste. The main focus of this typeface is to bring back those feelings of the crazier, younger, or what I like to say, the “Old School” years. The most suitable name for this typeface, I thought, was Old School Scratch.
When creating this typeface there were many steps, as previously mentioned the tedious time-consuming work. You are very involved when working with type; there are a lot of factors to consider. Not only are you concentrating on a manually generated typeface, but also the digitizing factor to create your handwritten masterpiece in the computer. This step of the process either makes or breaks you. I found it to be the most monotonous work I have ever done in my life. Setting the x-height, ascender, descender, and cap-height were all very easy to do with the aid of a dialog box you plugged information into. Plugging the values into the dimensions dialog box standardized the values for every cell in the glyph. The thing that got me when going in manually to each letterform was the spacing on either side of a letter. First I thought I could get away with setting the horizontal spacing the same for every letter, I was wrong. I did set some decent dimensions for my type. My ratio of x-height to cap height is approximately four hundred to seven hundred twenty. My ascender is located on the eight hundred and thirty-six mark, and my descender, is placed on the negative three hundred fifteen spot. Overall, the process of designing a typeface is quite the accomplishment.

  49. I don't know how to upload my sketches for the cover of the book but my typeface is very even. All the letters are of equal height. Some of the letters are broken up meaning they don't connect fully but it creates a cool looking effect when its put on paper.

    Here's my typeface um:

My typeface forms curves and shapes I'm still adjusting to. I'm used to having at least two different handwriting styles but this one I've grown to like since I started writing with a quill pen out of hobby and penmanship issues. I can see in my typeface that I wear down my pencil until it retains the pen tip and some letters have a great deal of line variation like the letter 'G' or lowercase 'm'. I noticed that the typeface has more fluidity despite the fact in my normal handwriting there is often no constant in the size of letters be it lowercase or upper case.

I decided to label my typeface 'stereoTYPE' for a few reasons. I feel as if this handwriting has become sterotypical of me for the sake of my mother because it is one of the neatest print styles I have. I also think handwriting can be stereotypical whether you dot your i's with hearts or if you make faces with letters or apostrophes or something. I suppose sometimes I figure my handwriting falls under that of a seven year old, the letters can be unconnected and rough at times. At other times I am reminded of the constant typical lines I used to fill a spiral with every year to improve my handwriting, 'THe quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.' I think there was spite in that sentence when we first began creating typefaces this semester because of that. Lastly, I think I also labeled my childish type , and yet strangely elegant in my opinion, stereoTYPE because I have actually never fit into a stereotype and I don't think my typeface honestly fits into one as well.
